There is a host of red wines that will nicely fit the bill here! Cheese is very red wine friendly and of course barbequed beef burgers will be ideal with some big and beefy reds. Look for a crianza or a reserva Monastrell, the time spent in oak will blend perfectly with fresh-off-the-BBQ flavours and its forward fruit will perfectly complement the burger’s juicy tastes! Or go for an oaked wine with a high proportion of Syrah/Shiraz in the blend, this will have similar flavours to the above, but with a touch of spice too!
Salud!

Every time you publicise a trip to a bodega, I check my diary to see if I can possibly come along – they are all such fun. Quite apart from travelling with a jolly crowd of fellow wine-lovers, we always get to see such wonderful countryside. It makes a lovely change not to be driving and of course, it means that I won’t have a problem with the boys in blue – or green for that matter. For me, the best bit is the actual tour of the bodega. You always seem to take us to such picturesque bodegas run by the nicest people all of whom are able to convey their absolute love of the process and, of course, the final product. I have to say that your extensive knowledge of wine is a great help too especially during the tasting and I’ve learned so much about what to look for when choosing a wine. Thank you for all your bodega trips; I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them – long may they continue. Ros.
Although I drink quite a lot of wine, I was anxious to learn more about it so when I learned of your course I signed up. Although the course was primarily designed for the restaurateur wishing to improve his knowledge of wine and raise the quality of service to his customers, it was billed as also being suitable for ‘other interested parties’ which described me perfectly! As I would expect from you, the course was incredibly comprehensive and I learned a huge amount – but how on earth did you manage to make it so interesting and such fun at the same time? I can now buy wine with great confidence knowing that I’m not going to be ripped off but paying a fair price for a wine of excellent quality and I’ve even begun to substitute quality for quantity in my wine drinking!
